No Indian meal or snack is complete without a chutni to add that extra bit of zip and zing. India has almost as many chutnies as it does gods! And, like the gods, they are an integral part of everyday life in India. The word ‘chutni’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘chaat’, which essentially means “lick-your-fingers well”. Whereas a British ‘chutney’ tends to be a sweet and vinegary condiment, Indian chutnies can vary between sweet, spicy, tangy, nutty and zingy.
